African Development Bank gives grant

The African Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US $4.5 million grant to WFP for drought relief to the Horn of Africa, the two organisations said in a statement released on Wednesday. The funds will be used by WFP to purchase and transport emergency relief supplies to Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and other countries affected by the regional drought. WFP is implementing a US $445 million operation for some 16 million people in the region, the statement said. ADB said it had provided funds for emergency relief operations through WFP “because WFP is the front-line United Nations agency in the fight against global hunger”. WFP was “well established in the Horn of Africa with a broad-based network of partner institutions”, the statement said.
