“Nothing achieved” in South Africa

Former foreign minister Cyprien Mbonimpa, who led the government side to Pretoria, said “nothing was achieved” during the four-day meeting. Interviewed by the BBC Kirundi service, he said they were informed by the mediators that CNDD-FDD had refused a direct meeting. “We do not understand it,” he told the radio. The government side had talked to the other rebel groups present - FROLINA, CNDD of Leonard Nyangoma and PALIPEHUTU of Etienne Karatasi. However, these movements do not represent the main fighting groups. Mbonimpa added he was not discouraged by CNDD-FDD’s refusal to meet, and hoped another date would be set.
