South African minister visiting

South African Defence Minister Patrick Lekota is visiting Burundi to assess the situation in the country and give impetus to the peace process, regional observers told IRIN. According to Burundi radio, he visited insecure provinces of the country such as Rutana and Ruyigi and met local officials and military commanders. He was briefed on the ongoing clashes between the military and rebel forces, the radio said. It cited the Burundian officials as saying that until the issue of rebel attacks was addressed, it would be difficult to bring about peace in the country.
