WFP conducting post-distribution monitoring

WFP is currently conducting a post-distribution monitoring exercise in Bugesera area in Kigali Rural prefecture, a WFP official told IRIN on Friday. The area was suffering from food insecurity but WFP intervened and distributed some food in May, the official said. "The agency is now carrying out post- distribution monitoring in the area and two other communes of Gikoro and Bicumbi," he noted. "Because of lack of rain crops were drying up," he explained. WFP hopes that after the monitoring, it could embark on a food-for-work programme in one of the areas, "possibly in July". An inter-agency crop assessment is currently going on in all parts of the country, he said. The assessment is likely to end next week and it is only then that WFP will be in a position to know the food situation in these areas, the official added. Rwandan media have been reporting "looming hunger" in various parts of the country.
