Rwigema reported to have fled

Former Rwandan prime minister Pierre Celestin Rwigema has fled the country, according to 'Rwanda Newsline', a privately owned weekly newspaper published in Kigali. "Pierre Celestin Rwigema is feared to have fled the country ... [he] was to appear before the Unity and Reconciliation Commission to explain charges of violating the fundamental principles of national reconciliation enshrined in the Arusha peace accord" of 1993, according to the paper's issue of 22-28 May. "I don't know the sources of the newspaper but government officials here and our embassy in Bonn [Germany] are in touch with the former prime minister, who went to Europe to attend the wedding of a relative at the weekend," Emmanuel Ndahiro told IRIN.
