Ghali designates mediator for Togo

The Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, Boutros Boutros Ghali, has designated Ide Oumarou to mediate in talks between Togolese political groups, PANA news agency reported. Ghali said in a statement that Oumarou would take over from Moustapha Niasse, who has been appointed prime minister in the government of Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade. The talks are aimed at reaching a compromise in the country's political crisis that erupted over the June 1998 presidential elections in which President Gnassingbe Eyadema was declared winner. Opposition leaders contested the results.
