Former minister leaves country

Equatorial Guinea's former foreign minister, Santiago Eneme Ovono, travelled to Spain some two weeks ago following a disagreement with President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, AFP reported a source as saying. The minister, who is also the president's cousin, said during a family meeting in early January that Nguema was "seriously ill" and should resign, the source told AFP. The president, reportedly furious, denied this accusation and threatened to take his cousin to court for slander if he was unable to substantiate his claim. Obiang, 57, has been in power for 21 years. He recently denied a report in a Spanish daily newspaper saying he was suffering from advanced prostate cancer, AFP reported.
