Lusaka sends police to Kosovo

Zambia is to send 19 police officers to serve with the United Nations international police force in Kosovo, PANA news agency reported on Wednesday. Their deployment follows a UN appeal for experienced police officers to join its planned police force of 3,000 men. Copper production falls Production at Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) fell nearly 27,000 tons in the year ending 31 March to 255,952 tons from 282,833 tons the previous year, according to a mining company statement. The statement, quoted by media reports on Wednesday, said the lower production level resulted mainly from problems at ZCCM's Mufulira mine. The largely state-owned ZCCM is still negotiating the sale of two largest mines and other assets to a group led by the South African mining house, Anglo American. The International Finance Corporation, the World Bank's investment arm, is also understood to be cooperating with Anglo American to procure the mines.
