بعد مرور أكثر من ثلاثة أشهر على الزلزال المدمر الذي ضرب هايتي، يقول عمال الإغاثة أن كبار السن في البلاد لا يحصلون على الاهتمام الذي يحتاجون إليه. وقد طالبت منظمة هِيلب إيج إنترناشيونال HelpAge International لمساعدة المسنين بضرورة إيلاء اهتمام خاص لكبار السن، مؤكدة على أهمية ألا ينصب هذا الاهتمام على احتياجاتهم الصحية فقط ولكن أيضا على المساهمة الفريدة التي يمكن لهم أن يقدموها لجهود الإغاثة بصفة خاصة وللمجتمع بصفة عامة.

وتتجاوز أعمار حوالي 800,000 نسمة من سكان هايتي، أي حوالي 7 بالمائة من مجموع سكان البلاد، سن 60 عاما. وقد تأثر حوالي 200,000 شخص منهم بأضرار الزلزال، حسب منظمة هِلب إيج إنترناشيونال.

وبالرغم من توفر العاصمة بورتوبرنس على دور لرعاية المسنين تابعة للقطاعين العام والخاص، إلا أن هذه الدور تعرضت لأضرار بالغة إثر الزلزال ولم تعد تملك القدرة لاستيعاب كبار السن الخارجين من المستشفيات أو الذين هم في حاجة لرعاية خاصة.

ويضم معرض الصور هذا صورا لعشرات المسنين الذين تسبب الزلزال في قلب حياتهم رأسا على عقب.
