In 2011, the Libyan city of Benghazi was the capital of the revolution that toppled President Muammar Gaddafi. After his fall, the French and British leaders toured the city in jubilant celebration. The future looked brought.

Four years on, the optimism has faded. The city is a front line in a brutal civil war between two rival armies backed by rival governments.

For civilians, checkpoints, bombings, rubbish and price rises make life tough. Those residents who haven't escaped are practising escapism.
