Democratic Republic of the Congo. Displaced and struggling to survive Sister Godelieve helps serve food to internally displaced children from Kasai at the Orphanage of the Carmelites of St Joseph in Kananga, Kasai Central province. Most stay with host families at night and come here to eat and play.BACKGROUND INFORMATION:People fleeing unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo are at a record high due to violence that has destroyed lives and livelihoods across the country. Unrest in Kasai, Tanganyika and Kivu has more than doubled displacement figures since 2015. As of October 2017, some 3.9 million Congolese people are internally displaced and 620,000 are in exile in 11 African countries. At the same time, the country itself hosts over 520,000 refugees from neighbouring countries and the figure is rising. In the Kasai region, many people who fled the militia violence that began in 2016 have begun to return. As of 23 October, over 710,000 people had gone back – many finding their property, businesses and schools in ruins and family members killed. The situation in Kasai remains unstable and humanitarian access limited. Over 762,000 people remain displaced in the region, and 27,000 remain in Angola. Only $49 million of the required $236 million funding has been received so far. - التاريخ
